Ever wonder what goes on under all those layers??? This is classic 1850’s undergarments. The upper classes would often have higher quality materials and lace and embroidery, while even working class women might have added unique embroidery. . First, the drawers. These are linen pants and were often split at the crotch for ease of bathroom access. Second, a chemise. Basically a linen slip that wicks away sweat and keeps the outer garment clean for longer. *here is where the corset would go, my client decided to forgo it* Third, a chorded/quilted petticoat. This stiffens the skirts away from the lady and makes it easier to walk around and do chores… just ask the ladies at #missouritown1855 ! Fourth, the petticoat. This could be starched to make it stiffer, or multiple layers could be added to enlarge the silhouette. Finally, the outer dress. She’ll have her own post!

A ✨personal project✨ Expressing to my mother that I want to make a quilt coat and asking if she has any lying around instead of buying one at the thrift store, she produces a handsewn quilt made by her great grandmother. The fabric on it is scraps from the dresses she made for her daughters. I was so scared to cut it up, but it would have continued to sit in a closet collecting dust. I gave it another life, and it feels like a hug from my ancestors every morning. I didn’t throw away a single scrap and made my mother a little pillow of one of the flowers, stuffing it with all the excess scrap. I’m in love with it ❤️💕 #quilt #quiltcoat #ancestorwork #upcycling

Nostalgia for this gorgeous creation I made back in 2021, I was doing the Greek Deity Challenge and was trying to make historical women’s garments based on different gods and goddesses from the Greek pantheon. . This one is Hades. I imagine the god of the dead as well-tailored, and immediately the structure of the #1880s came to mind. Dark with hints of rich blue, indicating both the hottest hot and coldest cold of the underworld. (You could also argue it was related to Disney’s Hercules, when in reality it was probably Lore Olympus.) . Excited to participate in #jantober2023 hosted by @workingsquirrel !

Peeking around the plants in the shop are a couple of Kodama, spirits from Japanese folklore that are said to inhabit trees. They are notably characters in the Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke, a gorgeous film with an overarching commentary on human’s relationship with nature.
